Excerpt from interview "The Next Frontier: AI’s Role in Transforming Learning and Development," Ingenuiti
Learning and Development (L&D) professionals Chris Casement (CC) and Johnny Hamilton (JH), moderated by Jerry Zandstra (JZ) of Ingenuiti, discuss the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the L&D field, framing it as a paradigm shift, exploring AI, ML, and GenAI nuances, and discussing implementation frameworks.
Main Themes:
AI as a Paradigm Shift: AI fundamentally changes L&D, altering roles and capabilities. "I would call this a paradigm shift... And I think Generative AI has the potential to truly disrupt our industry and how people learn." (CC)
Distinguishing AI, ML, and GenAI: AI is the broad category, ML a subset for self-learning, and GenAI uses LLMs for context-specific content. "What I find most compelling for learning professionals is Generative AI (GenAI) that uses Large Language Models (LLM). GenAI allows users to add a perspective or frame around a concept." (JH)
Personalization with GenAI: GenAI enables tailored learning experiences. "When you want a definition, you can now have both the standard version and one that applies specifically to you and your situation—both of which improve comprehension and learning outcomes." (JH)
Frameworks: ADDIE/SAM, Learn-Practice-Apply, and Here, Near, and Far aid AI implementation.
AI Tools: ChatGPT, Bard, and others assist in content creation and analysis.
Dangers: Intellectual property and "garbage in, garbage out" are key concerns.
"Another danger is 'garbage in, garbage out.' AI remains a tool and, like every tool, it is only as good as the person using it." (JH)
Learning Science: AI impacts design, but learner fundamentals remain. "I think AI alters our design and development processes, and as a learning leader, I think about that everyday. But I’m not sure it alters us as learners—we still need more data and experiences to truly evaluate that." (CC)
Examples: AI enables simulated conversations, adaptive learning, and automated assessments.
Global Considerations: Legal rights and localization are crucial.
Conclusion: AI offers significant L&D opportunities, but requires strategic planning, ethical consideration, and human expertise. Organizations should assess readiness using frameworks like "Here, Near, and Far.
